Today I had the privilege of participating in the 6th annual Tractor Drive for a Cure. This year’s fundraising event was conducted in memory of my mom, who lost a short battle with lung cancer in January 2010, and in honor of Sue Jewell, a neighbor who is a breast cancer survivor.
David Groce, one of the event coordinators, reported that preliminary numbers are record-setting with about $12,774 being raised in this year’s event. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Hart County, Ky. I am grateful to all of my colleagues, friends and family who generously contributed to the cause in Mom’s memory.
The event began in 2005 and has been coordinated by Horse Cave neighbors, friends and family members. Mom became the official photographer of the event. And, in Mom’s absence this year, I was asked to shoot photos of the drive. I shot more than 500 images and am uploading a selection (including shots of each tractor) to my MobileMe gallery.
No one can replace Mom, but I just tried to fill-in for her as today’s photographer. I hope she would be proud of my work. I was honored to be able to participate.
